Both have there ups and downs... I don't really even have a preference since I have used both together for years. I have recently ditched CDs all together for virtual Vinyl software (Torq w/ Control Vinyl). It's really a matter of preference and funds... Playing on CD players is just as accepted these days and its alot cheaper in the long run as well. Turntables are all about the feel... They have no real advantage over CDs other than feel. If you have to have the feel of vinyl then go for the turntables but if you are just starting out I say go with some decent CD decks or Software. The features that todays CD decks and Software come with give the DJ alot more options as far as sound manipulation as well...

CD Decks:
Music is cheaper (vinyl cost about $10 a pop, 320kbps mp3s from Beatport $1.99-$2.49)
Takes up less space
No needles to replace
Looping and Sampling features are on alot of decks
Wont skip if you bump into them
Never have feedback issues (from excessive bass)
Your collection won't wear down like a vinyl record will.
Master Tempo/Key Lock - change the tempo without chipmunking

Turntables:
The feel of vinyl is preferable
Seeing your breakdowns in the grain of the record is an advantage
Easier to spin on if you haven't mastered spinning via the pitch control only
A lot of people love the snap, crackle, and pop...
