I know that it is good to drink water when you roll.

However one of my friends told me she was watching a program on some learning channel that attributed some of the deaths at Raves from people drinking TOO MUCH water???????

She said the program attributed it to some problem with nerve ending in the brain....wtf

Has anyone else heard anything like this?

if you drink enough water the salt levels in your blood will be too low, and that is what kills you.

But you would have to be obsessively drinking water for a while to get to that point (which is why it is so rare).

Its called hyponatremia. It can be avoided by adding a small amount of salt to the water you are drinking (like a couple of teaspoons per liter), or just not drinking an excessive amount of water.

A 160 lb. person would have to down 2 gallons of distilled H2O in 15-20 minutes to reach such levels. If it's tap water, you can effectively double that amount. Bottled water would fall somewhere in between.

Or mix sports drinks in there somewhere.

Ever heard of Leah Betts? She was a high profile Ecstacy casualty from the mid 90's. Sadly she died after one tab, at home at her 16th birthday party whilst her parents, one a Policeman, the other a nurse, were present. Her parents allowed pictures of her on life-support to be taken & used in an advertising campaign to publicise the dangers of Ecstacy but which was later discredited for having been financially backed by a consorteum of alcohol companies who, quite rightly, saw Ecstacy as a threat to their business.

Anyway, for many years the myth continued until it came out that in fact Leah had died from this "hypnoatremia" or whatever. For some reason she'd become aggitated as the E hit her, perhaps it was a strong one, and believed drinking water would reduce the effect of the drug. By the time her parents realised what was goin' on it was too late...

Its nearly, if not entirely, impossibly to ingest that amount of water. I had a couple of college buddies try to drink as much water as possible. I believe they got nearly to a gallon (drinking several oz. every 5 minutes or so) before their body temperature lowered too much for them to continue.

It was like 100 deg. outside and they were in ski jackets etc. to try and warm up, quite funny, although I never thought how dangerous it was for them.

Funny in retrospect.

I find that hard to believe.

Can you keep it down? Or do you puke it right back up?

Are you heavy set? Tend to eat a lot? Thats a lot of liquid for your stomach to hold.

That would be something interesting to watch.

The kidneys have a good system of ridding the body of excess water. I would not worry about consuming too much water. BUT I recently read that young women of reproductive age who take ecstasy are at a greater risk of dying as a result of rolling. This is because women have high levels of the female hormone oestrogen. The hormone prevents a woman's body from coping with water retention, that occurs when ecstasy is broken down and absorbed in the body. The excess water dilutes the level of salt in the fluid that bathes the body's tissues. This salt is crucial to the functioning of the nervous system and an imbalance within the body can be fatal. Since rolling is usually done in a clubbing/dancing environment, the heat in the environment is greater, which of course causes the person to drink a lot more water in turn making the problem worse.

The best thing to do is to vary drinking water with drinking a sports drink like Gatorade which has electrolytes.

Good point, but, isnt that hormone more present in pregnant women than not?

I'm not sure if the water retention hormone would really be of that signifigance unless you were prego and if you were and rolling I would come find you and slice your throat :slayer: not really.

yea, you're right, that hormone is more present in pregnant women (swollen feet and shit) but nonetheless, its still present in our bodies. Since the thread starter is female, I thought i'd point it out ;-)

back to the water...I heard that jailmates would dring excessively to get a buzz. Does anyone know if with no other intoxicants in the body water can give a buzz?

actually extacy is kind of what is known as(don't quote me on this) an osmotic diaretic...it shifts fluid in the brain to one side and can cause major dehydration...drinking water is good for u...and yes u can do is what is known in the medic field as "cool aid".....
