Recently I opened up Maxim Magazine and saw pictures of Kimberley Caldwell from American Idol scantily clad and posing in a provocative manner. A lot of young kids looked to the singers on that show as role models. Any clean image of that has now been shattered. Do you think that celebrities associated with the youth of America have a responsibility to keep that wholesome image for their younger fans that idolize them, or should they be able to do whatever they want without being criticized?

Just curious about what you think. :)

I don't think they have a responsibility to. Most of the people that enter those contests are in it for the exposure, attention, and potential for big bucks. Most of them are still kids themselves and wouldn't have the concept of what it means to be a role model.

Well I do not think most girls are reading maxim. Boys don't care about girl role models, a girl role model to them is a girl that is taking off her top.

What did you say?

Let me take off my top.

Ok you got my attention. Don't do drugs? OK!

People are human. They are going to do what they like. They care about everyone else as much as almost anyone else does. Which means very little. Some will thier it is thier responsibilty to keep a good image. Some are gonna pose for playboy! (GO Tiffany!!!)

I say good on Kimberly....might be her big "career highlight" which is sad in itself.....and i do kinda think it is a little misleading for a younger girl who might view her as a rolemodel

maybe im going off on a diff subject, but I think its sad nowadays the way some/alot of women are portrayed and have to resort to putting themselves out there and basing their lives around their looks and bodies, and seems degrading to me that all these girls growing up today dress like hookers and strippers as an acceptable norm wearing the shit they wear, and acting the way alot of them do......but then again I'll shut up cuz it is kinda sweet ;-)

Don't you people see that it is our culture that is at fault.
Taboos create fear and mistrust, and I shouldn't have to explain the ill effects of these two attributes.

i don't think she's has any responsibility at all. if the parents are letting them watch that crap in the first place they have more to worry about than a peekaboo nipple.

..so then they aren't role models for boys but objects?

I don't agree with it myself.

little girls probably aren't picking up a copy of maxim at a grocery store, but it's quite possible that they're going to come across one.

you could use the another example with christina aguilera...we all know that she's a dirty skank now, but what about when she was changing her image from a wholesome "genie in a bottle" type to whatever the hell you want to call that dirrty video.

did she have a responsibility to younger girls who idolize her to maintain a somewhat wholesome image? or should we have to explain to our children that christina and kimberly have decided that they don't want to appeal to them anymore?

i'm a little on the fence about this one.

i'd like to hear what other people have to say.

no one has any responsibility to uphold a wholesome image just because impressionable people might look up to them.

it might make parenting harder, but pretending to be something other than who you really are / really want to be to produce a completely fake image for impressionalbe minds is a much worse thing than just having kids see what's real (in the context of this discussion).

kids grow up, and when they do they will realize that the people they looked up to were lying to them, if those people keep up an image they don't really believe in. when you don't really believe in something your true feelings come out eventually. the kids are going to find out.

I agree with this, but I don't agree that taking your' clothes off in front of a camera inherently has a negative effect. Taboo is the only possible culprit if harm is done.
Women in African tribes have walked around topless since prehistory and it hasn't caused any harm.

Nudity is not in itself inheritantly negative, it's the purpose and reception of the image that can be negative. For instance, a standard of beauty that many girls will struggly to attain at the cost of mental health over the course of their lives.

I just look at the term role model differently from everyone else i guess.

No person on the planet deserves to be idolized for everything they do, we are all humans, we all make mistakes and misjudgements. Thats why there should be multiple role models, model yourself after their specific roles. Like how someone approaches their sports or music career, but then have another for how they approach family situations, and another for their problem solving ability. Putting too much faith and idolizing one role model for all your situations will lead to disaster, example OJ Simpson, Kobe Jackson, and this chick ive never heard of.

ima put it this way....her singles suck, her album is a flop...its not hard to see the real reason why she is doing the maxim thing....exposure. they are still pushing her tired ass on the "american juniors" show. but who really cares?

yeh shes kinda hot. so let her show it off. she obviously has no career in music...so lets see if she picks up modeling now.

her foot is in the hollywood door. shes (or her agents are) just trying to push it open any way she (they) can.

BRING ON THE ( o Y o )

LOL

1. Kids are impressionable, yes.
2. Celebrities are role models, yes.

However, parents need to take responsiblity over what their children are exposed to.

Although I don't agree with the naked Kimberly Caldwell's of the world, I don't think that I should be the one telling her to put her clothes back on and to think about what the children may be seeing. She's gotta get a paycheck too.

just because you grow inthe public eye, does not mean you shouldn't be allowed to grow up in the public eye. Artists should be allowed to like normal people, if they want to show of the bodies we've watched grow then so be it. In the end they have to mature like the rest of us. Except Gary Coleman and that Webster kid (i say kid and he's pushing 35) but you get the point.

In the desensitized society we live in today, scantly clad people are an everyday thing. Personally I dont agree with it, but the morals of the world are slowly sinking into nothing. Kimberly is doing what makes her money, she doesn't care who looks up to her or how old they are. But this isnt a new thing. Working in the airport, I get to see a vast array of the human species, and to tell you the truth, the only females who aren't dressed to impress are the ones whose religion prevents them from doing so. Honestly i think most of these girls are learning these things from Mommy first and then following suit as they see celebrities like Brittany, Christina, and Kimberly.
