Please. If advertising didn't work, they wouldn't advertise.
Annually, the amount of money spent on billboards, tv promos, not to mention the money poured into dolls, the emphasize of beautiful tv and movie figures, etc. All of this combines to feed the image of what is beauty.
When you go to a grocery store, where are the parental foods placed and where are the children foods placed? Eye level appropriate to the age groups eye level. When you walk down the aisle of a toy store, nothing more than rows of baby toys and doll houses, perfect to drive home the fact to our daughters that parenting is the appropriate place for the female.
Advertising not successful? Consider the financial success of the BRATZ line of dolls which has expanded into lunch boxes, school supplies, upcoming video games. The continued investment of the average woman into cosmetic line after cosmetic line, the continuing rise of reports of psyche struggles from woman who have weight issues and conflicting acceptance of themselves, the billion dollar pornography industry that serves as a reminder to girls of what guys are looking at and what they are finding appealing.
Why this very message board now uses advertising as a means of funding support. If advertising does nothing, then why how do mega stores and encompassing toy lines continually report annual growth figures in denial of downward economic trends? It is not the singular influence that will affect a child, it is the combination of multiple influences seen from every direction of their lives that will influence them. The number of peers they have telling them every day at school what is right and what is wrong, and what parenting influence is there when both parents spend more time working and letting their child watch the very television that will influence them from years to come?
How about the staggering rise in teen pregnancies and sexual encounters? Oh, surely this cannot be in any part due to the fact that there are other factors besides parents? But tell a twelveyear old girl that it's possible to get pregnant and that, in fact, she is, and will she fully comprehend that statement?
Advertising doesn't work? We can know Nike runs slave factories over seas and yet never bother to, perhaps, select a different brand. Why even now we're victims of advertising, subscribing to particular services to engage us online, and the only thing that will seperate you from the hundreds of millions of consumers is whether or not you fully thought out that decision and reached a completely logical conclusion about each and every single one of your purchases and investments over the course of your life. Unless, starting today, you begin to do so.
This is not to say good parenting isn't a strong influence, because it is. But if we continue to accept exterior influences to bombard our children during the multitude of hours during which we are not accessible and never even once protest, then we have only accomplished the bare miminum. At the very least, start by turning off the television.
