So I'm looking for ideas for cool things to do in Manhattan for my trip in August. Anyone been there before and have some good ideas?

times square at night, concerts in the park should be going on a few blocks from times square.. you can visit the library that ghostbusters was filmed at.. visit the WTC site.. lots of construction and a fence around it sop you can't see much. still cool to say you've been there.

all of gernes ideas involve gimp masks, sex toys, and mechanical bulls.

i lived in manhattan for a year. i really enjoyed just walking around. if you like "seeing" stuff, off the top of my head i'd say hit up the following. these will probably work as good waypoints -- they're neat to see, but won't take up a ton of your time. however, they're sorta spread around a bit so you can make your way through major parts of the city with some goal (reaching some of these points).

* central park -- jacqueline onassis reservior is a good target, also maybe the boathouse as a landmark
* ground zero (it's not about "excitement"...might as well go there if you're near it imho) -- also very close to city hall and j&r (retarded large electronics store)
* new york public library on 5th ave (ghostbusters)
* national museum of the american indian ("manhattan museum of art" in ghostbusters ii), also a good waypoint south on the island
* new york stock exchange (also a good southernly waypoint)
* columbus circle
* times square at night (you probably won't spend much time here...)
* flatiron building
* grand central terminal (go into the main hall)
* park ave and lex ave around 45th-59th
* new york supreme court (60 centre street)
* union square
* washington square park
* go to the top of rockefeller center ("top of the rock") -- personally i'd say go at night, but if you can, go during the day too (or just the day if that's your thing)
* if you go to the top of the empire state building, just go to the first observation deck - the highest one isn't worth it (the glass is marred from vandals and the view is obscured by the window framework)
* get within good viewing distance of the chrysler building at night, preferably from somewhere high

plenty more to see, but this might be a good start.

if it works for you, walk as much as you can to and from the places you see. just walking around in the city is a great experience and you never know what you'll see along the way. also, if you don't already know it, the numbered streets run increasing in number south to north, and the aves in increasing number from east to west. this is way handy if you're still in the numbered streets and get turned around, or if you want to explore without feeling like you'll get lost.

...and if you want a totally bad ass sandwich, go to winston's deli at 89th and columbus (i lived not far from there at 103rd and ate there all the time...awesome sandwiches, and open late).

oh, also, it sounds lame, but if you're into seeing the city and learning a little bit, but don't know where to start, take one of the many bus tours that are available. you can really quickly cover a lot of ground, figure out where you might like to go roam around more, and most of the time you can hop on/hop off as you like for a good chunk of the day.

i was underwhelmed by pacha but it's worth a look, maybe.

my advice is to look up all your favorite dj's, or even the ones you're curious about but know will never be in texas and look up their tour dates. they'll be in ny.

lucky for you, you're not under 21 like i was the last time i got to chill in manhattan.

Family things:

This is the last years for both the yankees and the mets in their stadiums... go see them.
The rangers are midtown at Madison Sq. Garden, see them if you like hockey.

The MET. It is head-and-shoulders above any art institution in the world. A more expansive collection than the lourve and the tate. Thats on 82nd and 5th. Added bonus, its pay what you wish. 1 dollar can get the whole family in. Dont feel obliged to pay, its funded both privately and publicly.

The guggenheim, frick, and MoMA are too expensive. ~15 each per ticket. the MoMA more, except after 4 on fridays... but fuck going to the MoMA on a friday.

Clubs are clubs.
The pyramid has been home to the longest running jungle night in the country. Its on A and 6th (i believe?)

If your brother is 21... GO TO McSORELYs. its the oldest bar in the country. A lot of history.... and they make their own brew... and its awesome. Thats 7th st. between 3rd and 2nd ave.... which happens to be about 50 feet from The Cooper Union... The first brownstone ever made. my alma mater.

Yeah, sure... washington square park and central park.... but no, fuckabuncha that.

WTC. sure, see it. take a picture. feel awkward for a little while. remember 9/11.

The observation deck at the empire state building is pretty balla.

A free thing to do: take the ferry to staten island and back. You get amazing views of the city and you go right next to the statue of liberty.

You cannot climb up the statue anymore.... dont waste your time looking for a way in. liberty island is more or less off limits.

Take the subway.
Walk around.

Colombus circle, by the bottom left hand of central park, is one of my favorite places to go.... but i think you have to live here to find that enticing. Its a fountain in the middle of the road with a big statue of Mr. Colombus himself.... woo, fucking, hoo.

Greenwich village and Soho are...well... beautiful. Its NYU area. there are 50,000 overpriveleged, rich, and relatively attractive young women that will do anything for fashion and attention. Take one home, fuck her, tell your friends you banged a skank in your parents hotel room.

Spend too much on dinner a few times. The restaurants here are fucking a-mazing.

do not, DO NOT, go to applebees or olive garden. You're in manhattan... taste the culture. Theres a lot of it.

Chinatown is fun... for about 5 seconds. Buy an I <3 NY tshirt for 2 dollars and get the fuck out. There are asians everywhere.
Also, while you're down there, get dim-sum. its good food. Also, find a place that you know they dont speak much english. Thats where the good food is.... if you dont know what it is... dont ask. you dont want to know.
just fucking eat it, you puss.

Little italy is now only about 1 or 2 blocks big. The chinese bought the rest of it and pushed the italians out. There will be shitty food there and a bunch of people from new jersey.
Walk through it, pay too much for a canoli, and leave. Make fun of anyone from new jersey... you can tell who they are by their hair cuts, blue eye liner, and orange skin.

in greenwich village, Go to Blue Note. Listen to some jazz. Its good for the soul.

Most of the clubs in the city are suck. 12 bucks for a drink is not what i call a good time. Plus, the people that are willing to pay 12 bucks for a drink are not people that I would consider people Id like to drink with.

There are, however, some bad-ass speak-easies and old school-style cocktail lounges. Potentially douche central, but the drinks are fucking killer.

Yeah? yeah!

ps1 is in queens. and the parties are pretty gay.

and by gay i mean flaming. :xfruit:

Brooklyn art museum hosts parties on the first saturday of every month.... pretty rad as well.
there are few things cooler in the world than dancing and drinking next to a Rodin sculpture.

Leave the family at home. Jump on the L train and go to Studio B in Brooklyn.
