Considering the cost and transportation of vinyl, any rational musician would be looking for an alternative. Especially in a flash in the pan industry like underground music. Everyone likes vinyl, but I do not think the fidelity is worth the hassle. Is it boring to watch a cd-j dj? It sure is. I still would rather see a vinyl set. But I know it is not practical or even affordable for most djs now. Especially if you rip a track at no cost to yourself. Djing is still way too elitist for its own good. Tons of posers, hardly any innovation. Not that it is any different from any other genre. You can still have an amazing set using any number of technologies. I will say CD-Js are more stable than final scratch(which I have seen malfunction too many times at shows). Never rely on a computer for your set.

On a sound quality note between vinyl and CD, even if there is a loud sound system in a club which is loud and bumping, the system in most cases not good enough to actually really show the differences between the two. The majority of club/events have mediocre setups regardless of how loud and bumpy they get. If anything the sound difference is miniscule in this scenario. Now if you have a fairly top tier system(high quality amps, speakers & subs) it is much easier to tell the difference between CD and Vinyl. In cases where the sub is firing 32nd notes, you'll see most systems choke hard regardless of which format you're using.

Of all the events I've been to, I'd say about 1 out of 10 actually has a fairly top tier system.

id put it way less than that. maybe 1 in 20 shows i go to have what i would call "great sound" from top to bottom. including everything from megaclubs in minneapolis to warehouse parties and so forth.

great bass requires retarded amounts of power, and a driver that is RESPONSIVE, not just capable.

vinyl is potentially better than CDs, but no one will ever have cartridges or ears good enough to make a difference. It then comes down to cost and practicality. CDs win.

cds skip at very unexpected and inconvenient moments....even when you REALLY REALLY take care of them...

Records stand the test of time WAY BETTER than cds do anyday.....

Get a good set of ortofon cartridges and you get some really clean crisp sound...
