I'm not sure. Some kind of hardware issue. Probably trying to get 'em out too fast before working out the bugs.

It's about 2 years old though, so in M$ land, it's about time for something to go wrong. Luckily they extended the warranty and are fixing it for frizzle.

Biggest issue for the system was heat dissipation. It's basically a mini-computer they packed into too tight a space. Newer revisions have more efficient heat sinks and overall better components. It was originally like buying a bottom of the line Dell Dimension with a fancy-shmancy graphics adapter.

Yes we were. Did all the troubleshooting and it dissolved to a hardware issue.

I was thinking about getting a new console. X-Box seems cool but there really isn't any games that spark my interest and I don't feel like paying a monthly fee to play online. PS3 doesn't have a lot of games now but I know in the future they will have bad ass games (I'm waiting for God Of War III). Of course it's waaaay to expensive right now. The Wii is a lot of fun and I can only see it getting better later. Of course the PC never fails me.

Mine was serviced fairly quickly and I was grateful for the extended warranty. However, it still didn't save me from having to shell out for another core system plus warranty. Not to mention, I kept the core and sold the refurbished model on the cheap. One month later, my 360 stopped reading my disks. I can understand the flawed design, but really it shouldn't be that hard to get a reliable dvd player into a 360.

Total Spent:$400 on launch model(bought at a Military base which I mistakenly failed to extend my warranty). Fails to RROD
$300 + warranty for new core system Fails to read disks properly
Bestbuy states they no longer "carry" that sku of the core model. They refund me my $300 but keep the warranty processing fee. Total bullshit because they usually just swap out the model if its within the first year. They stated because I didn't have to deal with Microsoft that it was worth the warranty. I laughed.
I end up buying the Falcon revised edition with the improved heat sink and hdmi output. This costs an extra $110 50 dollars over the original core model, plus $60 for the warranty.

Grand Total for gaming with Microsoft:$810 not counting(cables, games, extra controllers, battery packs, chargers, and all the other piece mealed shit)
I could have built nice gaming rig with that setup and saved myself ALOT of headaches.

Either way Microsoft gets my gaming dollar, although I have opened up the PS3 for backwards compatibility to the PS1/2 libraries +HD content. I have been having more fun on Warhawk than ever did on Live. Live will become more lucrative if they drop the subscription fee and use advertising to balance the revenue impact. Then add a Platinium addition and price it at the Gold so you can pay for dedicated 360 servers(no p2p, you login). Make the Gold free with adverts, and of course Silver is moot.

recently sent mine out as well. started crapping out a month or 2 ago. same deal, red ring of death. fixed a couple 360s for some friends who had already taken their 360 apart before the announcement of the extension.

a couple friends used the towel trick about 8 or 9 months ago or so, worked out as a perm fix for them. we used some thermocouples to make sure we didnt actually fry the parts. in most cases the towel trick is not worth it, and a lot of people end up warping the board due to having repeat the method once every week or so.

Those of you who have sent your's in:

What was your turnaround time from the time you shipped to them, to the time you got it back?

Unplug the a/v cables, remove the hard drive, wrap it in towels, and turn it on. I've heard to let it sit for anywhere from 15 - 45 minutes (long enough to get really hot.) Forgot all the specifics, but the heat does something that makes it work again. Only a short term fix and doesn't always work. Do a search on YouTube. There's a shitload of videos about it.

not the post, but this theory makes no fucking sense what so ever.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing but then again there's prolly some heat-trip sensor that goes off and resets. There's really no telling.

I never tried it myself; just saw it all over the web. With my luck it would catch fire and burn the whole house down.

The house would burn down because you^ fell asleep on the couch again. So you didn't try the Brazilian trick?

Nah, didn't wanna do it to a 15 day old, expensive toy that's still under warranty. The trick worked on my PS2 for a while though.

I had a launch 360. It started RRoD after 3 months. M$ wanted me to pay to fix it so I said screw them and traded it in on a Ps3. The reason the 360 has the RRoD is because the GPU gets too hot. It warps the motherboard and the processor comes out of the socket. The only way M$ will ever get the 360 to stop doing this is to make the GPU 65nm as well. The made the processor 65nm which will take some of the heat away but not the main culprit.

wow...so much misinformation.

the major cause of RRoD is the motherboard expanding from heat, the x clamps that hold the heatsink on to the gpu can no longer keep the heatsink flush with the gpu and it falls off. gpu overheats and dies.

MS has already fixed the issue w/ the older gpu's (better x clamps) and with any xbox (minus the elites) on the shelves since Sept they've had the better x clamps and the 65nm chips.

Thanks for clearing all that up, Dirk. I would've been pissed if I'd gotten it back and something else happened shortly after.

I've gotta say, M$ has their shit together as far as service goes. They got the system on Tuesday and shipped it back yesterday. You can't really beat that.
