when you burn the disc are you only burning images from the hard drive, or are you actually able to create images from the cd/dvd drive and then burn? either way, frank is right, just buy a new one. 29 bucks(in general) will usually cover most drives these days.

Um, CD/DVD ROM drives on a laptop are cake.

Or maybe I just work on laptops more than the average bear.

The possibilities are too many, and most would lead to faulty components within the drive which if you were intent on fixing, would cost you about the same to simply replace the whole drive.
The one possibility that may be cheaper is that the laser is dirty. Try picking up a CD cleaner kit for around $5. It's an audio CD with a small brush attached over a certain track. If that doesn't fix it, buy a new drive.

wait.. you can burn cds.. but you cant read them?

can you read any cds at all?

Like if you grab an store cd, with a silver finish it will not read it?

Can you read your burned cds in other computers devices?

Mine reads CDs and can burn CDs (although it takes a lot longer than normal...i.e. used to be about 4 mins on iTunes, now takes about 15 minutes). If I play a DVD it stutters. Maybe something with the RAM or virtual memory?

My drive doesn't pick up CDs to play or execute... but when I burn cds and play them in something else... they work.
