I'm thinking about delving into this area of customization. Does anyone have any experience with it? Which Shell Replacements did you think are the best? Should I go for a commercial, or open-source version?

I think the first thing you should do is decide why you're replacing Explorer (I'm assuming you're talking about Windows). Security? Multimedia? Performance? Combo?

I guess I'd have to say Multimedia and/or Performance. It's not that Explorer doesn't work for me; I'm just looking to experiment.
