Completely underwhelmed. Maybe it was the hype....The game is like a bad version of quake and battlefield thrown together. It reminds me of command and conquer 3d edition. Where you could be first person in a command and conquer game. Interesting premise, but alas no cookie.
I will pass on this. Waiting for Unreal III.

Ever since Quake 1 had id Software failed to deliver a "complete" game. Ever since then they've basically been designing the groundwork for other game designers who want to take the manacles off things like story and gameplay. Like working with Paint vs. Photoshop, sure you can get a product out of either, but those well versed in Photoshop can produce a "prettier" product.

The ET group did a nice job with the last one. It is only a demo, but a rough one at that. I still have yet to play a good Battlefield type game since the original. Planetside is the best FPS experience I have ever had and I do not see that changing for awhile. Although, it is a little unfair to put this game up against something like Planetside, it should make a good game regardless.

I think if this was released a year ago, it would have more teeth. My biggest gripe is with the sounds. Although, this might be a issue with the engine itself. I have yet to hear a good set of acoustics, atmosphere, and overall ambience that have been missing from most id. games. Either they do not have the people to make it sound good, or they do not have the desire to really care about sound. UBI is the best studio imho for doing a overall complete package. This kinda resembles a basement project, but I love all the id. stuff and will continue to support it. I hope someone gets a nice mod for the sounds though.

why would you think it was a limitation of the engine? Have you played Quake 4/Prey?

I do not. I just haven't heard of a id game that really had great gun sounds, atmosphere etc...They get it right on graphics, but lack on sound. I have played Quake 4/Prey, and thought they did a good job with the sound. I have probably logged more hours on Quake 2 online than anything else. Mostly all railgun levels. So sound doesn't always make it or break it. With so many titles coming out though, I can see this one possibly being lost in the fray. I think it would have done much better about a year ago. Its hard to believe its been less than a year since Gears came out. PS3 should finally arrive this year with Rachet and Clank, and Haze.

I could see QA's sound getting the slight of hand. Considering Quake 4 had a sharpish nastiness to it like the rest of the game looked and felt (don't get me wrong, the graphics were pretty good). The Quake series has never really been known for its incredible sound. Doom 3 on the otherhand had superb sound. Though the Doom series, historically speaking, had excellent ambiet sound and music; at least imo.

I wouldn't doubt the engine's capacity for sound as most codecs provide all the most efficient codings to splice into their core code. That and I'm sure Carmack stripped and refined them, too. I think he had also mentioned that they would fore-go sound quality/quantity for graphical and packet transfer efficiencies in their multiplayer environments. Beyond that, it's up to your sound card, speaker configuration and quality to output what was originally intended (duh).

In regards to Prey -- that game had pretty decent sound. Unfortunately, for me, it didn't have much else. Decent concept that needed the "finishing touch". Prey had been in process since about the same time as the original Quake. I guess I just expected better/more. :-?

Wow, has it really been 13 years since Quake was first introduced? Can't believe it's been that long.

Well anyways it's a shame to hear that ET isn't all that it's hyped up to be. I'll form my own opinion once I get my computer. Of course I'll probably be heavily focused on completing Bioshock.

But anyways did anyone see the new engine they are coming out with? I believe they introduced it back in June. Well if you haven't here is a link.

For 10 day's of work, that's pretty impressive I think.

I played quite a bit of the Quake Wars beta, and although I was REALLY impressed with it, I did have a lot of fun playing it. The premise is pretty cool, and it seems more complete than the original ET.

I also very much enjoyed Prey. sometimes it seemed the textures were way too glossy, but that didn't bother me most of the time.

On a side note, it's id, and not I.D.. I.D. is what religious zealots are using to try and force Creationism down our throats. The id name is supposedly as "coincidental reference". Yes, I pulled that last part from the id Wiki page.

I'm definitely waiting for UT3, though.

Ya, that was one too many periods. I am a refugee from religious zealots so I can relate. Most of my brain damage comes from working in call center and dealing with slack jawed yokels all day. I have to adjust a "number" of things to relate. Corporations are bad mmmkay...

I like the idea of ranking up in Quake Wars, which I think might be the saving grace to its horrible presentation. Most of the original ET was based off of Nerve's multiplayer with a few additions. I am not sure if Splash Damage will give the same result. It borrows from several games and ends up Battlefield:Quakewars. Which may or may not be a bad thing depending on.

Just the impression I got from the demo. Very low presentation value, and I have more fun jumping into a Q4 deathmatch than this game. That could change with the overall release.

Halo Wars is looking very promising. Too bad I am sick of the Halo franchise, and their enemies. Maybe Master Chief will be killing giant teddy bears with rainbows flying out their ass this round.

Jumping to avoid fire. I play in two leagues that do not allow bunnyhopping for 2142. Our server has rules against it and to be honest it's the cheesiest tactic to stay alive. When the AI is programmed for this it promotes players to do it. Not my kind of game.

Why? What's wrong with it? They put it in the game, right? This is like T.T'ing over getting owned by BFG9000 use. What's so hard about spamming the space bar to help you stay alive? You trying to recreate realism?

We do try and develeop a specific type of gameplay. Not recreate realism but a near-simulation enviorment. We host servers for several games from FPS, BF2 mods which are closer to War Simulators than the BF series, WoW guilds, RTS and now TF2.

Here's our primer:
