Here's a protip for for everyone; When the guy who has been a Windows admin for almost a decade repeatedly says nothing but good things about Apple OS's, laptops and workstations, it usually means something.

Maybe 7-8 years ago, you couldn't.. But you can now.. Its not like going to frys and getting a case and what ever parts you want. But its pretty close and its getting better.

I would go with a Toshiba. No need to spend an extra grand to get the Apple name. Use that grand to get a really nice graphics card instead. You can get a Nvidia Go7950GT and have a multimedia power house. Or look for a system that has an upgradeable GPU slot(usually on high end Alienware/Dell laptops). I guess it depends on what you want to do with the laptop. Any of the laptops mentioned could do the tasks you are describing. There is a OSX beta project in the works for PC users, if you are really keen on the Apple OS. Whether it be blue screen of death, or a spinning beach ball, shit happens. Whatever you get, I would insure it to the max. Get spill protection etc...You might also check the track history with repairs, customer service, etc.. I know Apple has a high customer service rating, but that is mostly due to all the koolaid their customers routinely ingest.

BTW if you need a HP OEM version of XP for it, LMK. It's perfectly legal to downgrade to XP w/ an OEM Vista license.

I was looking at the Vostro line from Dell. They're not bad at all and you can get XP installed.
