I don't about you but why is it when I want to record a new mix, I suddenly slip into a rut and lose all of my skill. You try your best, but somehow you can't beatmatch for shit. Grr.. Really aggravates me.

Your thinking to much about making the perfect mix. The key is to just do it. Always have the recorder going, Dont say to your selft, This is going to be the mix I use. Say Ok time to mix and just do it. Its always worked for me anyways.

the way i approach it, is i'm always working on a new cd. so i just try to record everytime i play records. then i can go back and listen to where i fucked up. you get to where recording a mix is just a normal thing.

Well normally I do just hit record and go, but the problem with me is that I dont' vinyl shop very often, and I've reached the point where I'm running out of fresh material.

The last mix I did was pretty much off the cusp and it turned out really well, but for this one I wanted to try a different angle and have the set pretty much planned completely.

i'm in the middle of the same thing right now. always happens to me. i'm not the most on point dj around, but it's like i've never seen decks when i have to try and record. really frustrating.

i do the mix thing by planning out everything. I see a mix tape as a professional presentation. If there has to be some editing.. so be it. Now if you wreck every mix and it has to be fixed, you need hit the stop button and start practicing. But a touch up here are there is no problem. 100% of records (rock, pop, underground) produced nowadays are not recordings from only one atempt. They record their stuff over and over until it is perfect.

Djing live is a whole different story. (and a lot easier to fuck up and have no one notice, since there are echos filling to space to hide that not so perfect mix.)

yes record over and over! touchups or protools mixing is the easy way out...

its funny that people think you have to be 100% on beat all the time. I fuck up but all the time and sometimes everything is perfect. Depends my mood, day of the week.. whatever. Its like a painting. you do as much as you can to it. stop. look at it. find the errors. fix it. change more things. then decide to sell it at a gallery. You don't just paint from beginning to end and hope for the best. Unless ofcourse your art is abstract expressionism.. but thats another story. I can guarantee that there is not one mix CD that hasn't been altered in some way. Except of course Matthew herbert's "lets all make mistakes" Cd where you hear him fuck up about 4 times. (yes i counted). But that was his intent, to do it one take mistakes included. I mean what if you had the perfect mix going, and the last song somebody walks by and the needle skips? Or during a mix you accidently move the pitch and it goes off for a second. You shouldn't scrap the whole thing. Now if you are a fucking bad ass that can do it perfectly all the time.. more power to you. But bands and producers don't think twice about overdubbing.

hint... dont have your set laid out before you record.

you should know your records well enough to just play and know what is gonna sound good together. have faith in your skills and dont worry about the tracklist. If you are good it will work itself out.
