if you can give me an outline of exactly what you need/want to accomplish with this I can prolly recommend some solutions that are considerably less expensive (maybe even free) and more flexible.

We've only got 250 total machines at this company, and we need different images for each department and have yet to figure out a way to do a group policy. The last person at Altiris that someone here spoke to said that Altiris doesn't do that.

There are only two people (myself and the guy training me) that even do desktop support/help desk stuff, so it's super important that we have an appliance that makes our lives easier.

Here's the site for the KBox and all its awesomeness:
http://www.kace.com/products/kbox1000.php
http://www.kace.com/products/kbox2000.php

How many servers do you have vs desktops?

I know you can create profiles based on hardware and software, but it does require someone to be the baby sitter. Like, you create dell profiles for all your dell laptops, same with IBMs. We do the same with servers. The only issue is that laptops change more then servers. I think if you are using something for laptop/desktop roll out then you will have a lot of the same pains you currently have. I know our helpdesk has a standard as to what is loaded on X machine. Then the'll make an image of each machine type and save it in an archive. Its cumbersome but it works.

What you might try doing going forward, is form standards as to which laptop/desktops people can only buy. That way you can keep the amount of hardware down to a more manageable level. If at all possible.

We have...*thinks*...um, I have no clue how many servers. I can picture our server room but I can't remember the exact number. I'm going to say probably about 10. Maybe more. I'll get you an exact number tomorrow. Desktops are at about 170 or so, and we've got 80 or so field reps on laptops.

We've got different images set up for the different machines, but what we're wanting is an OS image, then sub images (for Accounting, Claims, Marketing, etc). We haven't found a way to do that.

Honestly, I'm probably explaining all of this in a way that isn't making too much sense, because there are a lot of other factors that have led us to the decision to use something else.

As far as already being outgrown for the KBox, I don't think I understand. It comes with 100 nodes. We're purchasing more.

no0b :nerdl:

What you are dealing with as far as images and subimages is something that everyone deals with but not anyone group has it nailed down. As for Kbox, you'll out grow its frame work in less then a year.

Heh, Dell with thousands of servers and tens of thousands of boxes -- manufacturer, distributer and reseller of all of the aformentioned software products -- and we still can't get a solid system down. Whatever product you're looking for, Dell has solution advisors and specialists that can walk your company through everything. Of course, don't be surprised when they ask for $20,000+ in software sales... ;)

Licenses are cheap.... I was being facetious with the dollar amount -- which did not include installation, setup and support costs. :D

true.dat

This is definitely my favoritest job I've ever had. Something different every single day, and I'm constantly learning new things.

When I was first offered this position, I wasn't sure I wanted to take it because I didn't wanna wear pocket protectors. Then I got to thinking, "Hey, do you really wanna be stuck doing data entry?" The answer was "Hell to the naw", so I accepted.

just make sure you don't end up being your friends and familys personal tech support bitch. I put an end to that FAST. Touch it once, own it forever. Not worth it.

Wait till you get up into some of the really high end stuff, its cool stuff, but just different. Setting up 5t's worth of diskspace is kinda wild at times. but after awhile it all becomes numbers.. Last year I spent over 630k on a project I was working on.. it was just numbers after awhile...

Try to get more into the Linix/Unix side of things, more so the Unix side of things. I'm not knocking linux by any means, but AIX and Solaris are really cool OS's to work with.

I'm the most technologically advanced person in my family, so they've been calling on me for years already.

Now I'll actually know how and why.

They've also signed me up for an A+ Certification class. And a Microsoft Certified something something something class. Apparently after each cert I get, I get a 20% pay increase. I WANT THEM ALL.

:orly:

I'm aware of that. I'm an intelligent person. I'm picking everything up a lot faster than I thought I would.

I'm sure owning a computer since the age of 7 helped a lot too.

Shit, my Uncle force fed computers to my family, preaching about how "They're the future!" Me on my 286, 12MHz with a 2600 baud modem, connecting to Prodigy internet in TEXT format... oh yes. :slayer: I think I pirated my first video game at the age of 8....
