Anybody making electro-tech house similar to Benny Benassi or Robbie Rivera? I REALLY like this style and am interested in sharing/learning tips and stuff.

thats the kind of house music I want to start making someday in earnest. it doesn't have to be that complicated to be catchy, I figure. just have a sick bassline and a short lil melody that you can mess around with some fx thrown in hehehe.

what kind of software are you using? I have been learning a lot about cubase lately.

yeah, that's one of the reasons why I want to make it vs. trance (which I also like). I use Logic Pro and Ableton Live and some software and hardware synths.

Basically it's highly compressed house at around 132bpm, with a one or two bar bass loop with a melody played that is very similar or exactly the same as the bass.

I've been playing around with many different hardware and software compressors trying to get it right. I've found that the Alesis 3630, Logic's Limiter, and Camel Phat are good compressors that can pump the music.

no offense guys, but just cause it's easy to make isnt a good reason to make it. why do you think this sound is getting such a bad rap these days? cause people aren't putting anything into their work and are just bangin out catchy tunes! dont get me wrong, i can really dig some tech house, but the last thing the sound needs is another jock who is producing it cause it's easy and catchy. there is a stark difference between the producers who are talented and those who are just out to make a name. i write this with the most respect, but dont take it lightly

soundchemist: try going a little deeper with your sound and drop the bpm to around 125-128. i think this helps bring out the inherently raw, jagged nature of the sound and puts more emphasis on the rhythmic patters. it may not be your thing, but it's how i like it :)

best of luck to you guys

geeze. What may be "easy" for one person might not be easy for another. For me, it's not "easy" to write good chord progressions like in trance. For me it's much easier to come up with a 1 or 2 bar loop. And what's wrong with catchy tunes?

I just tried going down to 128 and I like it....thanks. I've been noticing that alot of songs are going down slower than I thought.

glad you liked the suggestion of slowing it down a bit. pay close attention to how that change makes you interperet the music and try to encorporate those feelings/moods into your production

seems like you misinterpereted my statement about producing electro cause it's easy. if you're not aware of the criticism that electro house is getting these days, then it probably wont ever make sense. take pride in your work and everything should be fine

I haven't heard any criticism of ElectroHouse, but I'm not really "into" a scene locally.... I just listen to music that I like. But thanks for the advice.

btw, how do you know so much about Electro house anyways?? are you some low profile famous producer or something?

i wouldnt say that i 'know so much' about electro house, but i know enough to have a conversation about it.

really the internet is the place to learn about electronic music, especially message boards. lots of ideas and reviews float around the boards. even if you dont feel comfortable commenting on those boards, you can learn a lot from just reading what others have to say.

check out http://www.undergroundhouse.net. some people in that community have problems accepting opinions other then their own (they'll eat you up if you mention you like electro-house), but it's a great place to keep up with the future of house music

it seems like you are quite interested in elecronic music - how come you aren't involved in 'the scene'? where are you from?

ps, sean only thinks im wise cause i like his tunes :silly:

I've lived in Austin for about 6 years now. I used to go to raves and stuff 5 years ago, but then I had to get responsible and find a job and career and stuff so kinda stopped doin that. Also, pretty much none of my friends listen to electronic music now. it would be nice to bounce ideas off of someone...

I saw Benassi when he came to Austin like 3 weeks ago....it was awesome. :D

I'll check out that website. thanks. I actually frequent Ableton's and Logic Pro forums alot.

yeah i know how it is to have friends who arent into electronic music. as much as i love them, it is really frustrating. ive gone to shows by myself and had a great time though. people are generally really friendly and if you do this enough, you'll start to see familiar faces so even if you didnt arrive with someone, you'll always know people there. hell, if i wasnt leaving austin tomorrow for good, id be your friend!

anyhow, lots is going on in austin so you should get involved! do you spin? if so, try to get in contact with some of the people doing weeklies or whatever. record a mix and be known.

i just graduated from UT and am moving back home to boulder, colorado. im driving home, probably tomorrow, depending no how this storm plays out. they are expecting up to 2 or 3 feet of snow in parts of CO and have shut down the highway i was planning to take lol. i dont plan to be in boulder for more than a few weeks though - as soon as i get a visa im going to move to new zealand for 6 months to work/travel. grad school will be after that

yeah, the hip hop in austin is the worst among worst. but hey, that's what drunk college kids want, i guess. there are still places you can go to hear good electronic music though. you just have to know the nights and the spots. seriously, make it happen. the community needs all the talent it can get

ok im done trying to motivate you, i promise

ok. new question. How about the "Call on Me" style? Anyone tried that. Alot of songs have come out since with the same pumpy sound. I've tried it with and without sidechain compression and I'm not sure which I like better.

are you talking about the compression wave, where the treble stands out on the upbeats of the song?

I agree here. I started off wanted to to psy trance, but the bpms around 140-145 was just too fast for the raw sound I'm looking for. I noticed that I have to stay around 130 bpms at the most. I guess I do more like tribal house with a psychadelic twist. When I speed it up it sounds wierd. If you wanna listen to em and tell me what you think.

Tomcraft was one of the first I heard that used this bass sound heavly in his production. There are several plug ins that you can get to compress your bass on the down or up to get that real phat chugging sound. The Diamond Wave Bundle has a few of those.

If you really like this style of electro house try checking out Tom Nevile, Boogie Pimps, Rex The Dog, Moonbootica, there are others its just been a few years. From there you can get out of the couple measure baseline loop and start layering in change ups that make the song much more interesting. For melody's, there is nothing wrong with having it close to the baseline but it makes the song much more repeative and lost in the sea of songs out there that are like that. Try layering synths on with melody, one with harmony and one with lead. This gives you options of which ones to pull out at certain points of the song and can really give you depth as a producer.
