I don't think security measures have been that effective. Since "upped-security," I have taken two blades onto airplanes.

One was a small pocket knife in a set of toenail clippers, but the other was a cigar cutter with an extremely sharp razor blade. You could easily pull one side of the cigar cutter off and just have blade with a loop to hold with your index finger.

It's more ironic that the security officer completely emptied my back pack and bitched about carrying THREE lighters in it, so I handed a light to my friend's mom right in front of her and she didn't say anything. They scanned my backpack twice, put a wand in every puch, and reached their hands in it, but still, didn't find the cigar cutter in the most obvious pouch.

Flying is still safe in my opinion. I think that security measures are bigger in number than strength.

this goes out to all people.

flying is still safer than driving. my father has been a professional airline Captain for almost 30 years, and he can vouch for my honesty.

media exists to scare, frighten, etc. yahoo = media. id trust my own father over any form of media or spokesperson any day.

I totally agree. Statistically, you are 50 times more likely to die in a car than an airplane. Probably more likely to die in a sky scraper as well.
I just think it's hilarious/pathetic that after all the billions of tax dollars that were spent on making airplanes more secure, some bozo can manage to get all that shit on a plane and the "authorities" react completely inappropriately.

My theory is this: you should not be second guessing taking a plane flight based on what happened on 9/11/01. If you want to take a plane or have to take a plane to go where you need to go -- get on the damn plane, put your tray in the upright position, and fasten your damn seatbelt.

I honestly do not even care about statistics. Those are merely numbers designed to fool people into think one course of action is somehow safer than another. But in no case do they lead to the definite prediction of an outcome. Nothing is 100% safe and all it takes is that .001% chance of it being unsafe for you to die. As far as I am concerned, odds are for Vegas.

If I get on that plane, I may die. If I get into that car I may die. Or if I just sit on my ass at home afraid to leave and watch TV, I may die. There is no way to predict when and if another terrorist attack may come or even what form it may come in. And the only reason we are focused on that danger right now is because it so recent in our minds. Possible threats to our lives and safety surround us every day, and we do not real pay them any attention.

It's ridiculous to stop flying in planes, a form of safe, reliable and fast transportation that's been around for some time, because of one incident. There is no WAY in hell I am driving to Ultra 6 this year when I could simply fly on a plane and get there in a fraction of the time.

I simply feel that life is not worth living if you spend all of it worrying about death.

even if security isnt as tite... i doubt anyone is gonna be able to take over a plane with a box cutter ever again. to many americans would love a peice of terrorist ass, and someone would get ransacked by the other passengers before they made their way into the cockpit. i know id be beating some serious ass if faced with the situation.

That's a skewed statistic.

You prolly spend like 1000 times more of your life in a car than in a plane. People drive all the time, in unbelievable numbers. And theyre idiots while they do it, too. You're probably more likely to die in a car accident than to kick the bucket ANY other way.

Planes fly on a much more limited basis, and have MUCH less traffic and distractions to deal with in the clear, blue sky. The only problem with being in a plane is any malfunction or error takes place above cloud-level, which makes things just a tad more dangerous.

This is why we will never have flying cars. Think about how often your car has broken down on the road. You see it all over the place. Now if this happened up in the air, you immediately have a much larger problem for the people inside as well as whichever area is going to randomly become a smoking crater.

We take drifting to a dead stop for granted. 8O

my father works for american airlines, so i fly alllll the time.
i just actually flew back to dallas this past weekend.
i can honestly say flying is a lot more safer, hell they even make you take off your shoes and socks! i had silverware still packaged and they still went all through it. granted what happened on 9/11 changed the way people felt about flying, but now you cannot pass the gate without a ticket and gov't photo id, if you look or act suspicious they will grill you.....the security is no longer random people working for the airlines, its actually a gov't owned agency. on top of the DFW(in dallas) police and numerous other govt officals.

im not scared of a plane getting hijacked or crashing, you are more likely to die in a car than a plane, besides..when you are flying on the worlds top air carrier you feel a little more safe. :D
i wouldnt fly any other airlines.
id rather fly, especially when it is free.

i'd wager that that is due to the fact that you are many more times likely to be in a car than a plane in the first place.

You guys have the statistics all wrong. I've actually seen it in print before and it states something like, "For every 10 miles you spend in flight, you have 1/something odds of dying. For every 10 miles you spend in an auto, you have 1/something odds of dying."
Probably if all the people who drive were actually competent drivers, the odds would be tilted the other direction, but there are just too many jack asses on the roads for it to be safer than air travel. There are some accidents that you simply can't avoid no matter how safe you drive. For instance, I was in a head on collision on I-35 because some drunk decided to enter an exit ramp.
If you want to find these statistics for yourself, all you need to do is divide the number of deaths by the number of miles traveled. keep in mind that air traffic just in the US alone is millions of miles every day.
And again, I think the operators of the machines have more to do with safety than the machine itself.
