when they come into my office wanting something...

I purposely set up my office so that it's hard for users to see what's on my monitors....they have to go out of their way to walk around to the side of my desk that views the monitors

yet I have 5-8 users who everytime they come into my office make it a point to walk all the way around and look at what I'm doing to fix their problem(s)...WTF?!

I finally snapped and told one off today

"Do not come around to this side of my desk:

1. I don't like be stood over while I work
2. you will not understand what I am doing
3. I do you the courtesy of assuming you can do your job competently, please afford me the same until I prove otherwise"

Build a retaining wall out of copier paper poxes and add a bell.

Easy solution to that one Josh.

"This is a technical help forum. I'm getting help from one of my friends on here who deals with this problem all the time."

And Jim, you can get an obfuscating screen. They used them at the library in my hometown so that the person at the next terminal couldn't see what was on the others. It kept kids from looking over the shoulders of adults.

Those screens are cool when it's being used against you, but when you're the one using it it's like using an anti-glare screen, and those are just plain annoying.

Not to offend or sound like an ass.. But..Just remember your users are why you have a job.. And with the way things are in austin right now, people would kill and take a huge pay cut to have the job you have..

It would just really suck to hear that you lost your job and it takes you 7 months to find a new one,.. I just dont want people to go threw what i went threw..

ah...the plight of the laid of IT professional...I know it well.

Been laid of twice, it sucks yeah......but this has nothing to do with that.

I realize that my users are the reason I have my job, but this isn't about their status as user and mine as admin...it's about COMMON PROFESSIONAL COURTESY!

I do my job and I do it well, wait until I give you a reason to watch and make sure I do my job before you start doing it.

OK then it's time for plan B.

Place your samurai sword above your desk on ceremonial mounts and tell them that as Shinto is your religion you are required to kill any interlopers in your sacred shrine.

Even though it's complete bullshit, no one knows that much about Shinto and they'll believe you. Especially after you slice off a necktie or two.

It is annoying when people come behind the counter to look at the computer screen or grab stuff of the counter and look through it. Um, hello...don't you have any manners??? :nono:

Common professional courtesy? Come on man, how many people *really* have that? =) On a serious note, I found that people from other countries don't really know how to respect ones space or ones items.. I know the feeling, and it gets old fast.. (wanna make me go nuts? lean into me when you talk to me.. when i step back, cause Im feeling like your invading my space, take a step closer.. that to me is like an ice pick in the eye)..

If people are so hard up to watch you, then set stuff up so they can watch how truely boring a sysadmins job can be.. I mean its not like we're playing "hack the planet" or anything.. I mean god damn.. 9x out of 10 we are just looking at some stupid script, watching some network traffic or setting up some software.. whoopie doo.. give'em what they want! :silly:

edit for typos.. heh

edit one more time.. anyone see the guy on benwhite and 71 with a sign that said "sysadmin needs work" handing out resumes to people in cars? this was about 4 months ago..
