I'm more worried about these guys than Iraq. I think Saddam is an insane madman who should be disposed of, but I'm more increasingly worried when North Korea keeps telling its news service to let everyone know there will be a nuclear war that blankets the continent if any sanctions are imposed on it. Any thoughts?

They don't have enough weapons to wage a "nuclear war that blankets the continent".

Lets not forget the lessons of the cold war. Nuclear weapons are a deterrent weapon, their presence and the threat of their use is what they are used for. The one thing that has kept the nuclear powers from destroying each other for the past 56 years is the same thing that will keep us from destroying each other now. Its very simple, if one goes off, they will all go off, and we will all die. North Korea knows all too well that even if they had a launch vehicle that could reach the US, less than 15 minutes after launch there would be enough Peacekeepers and Minutemen III's on their way to level every square inch of their continent. With over 6,000 nuclear weapons still in the US arsenal, 50 of which are Peacekeepers (the most powerfull active ICBM in the world), in a single strike we could wipe out all of China, Russia, North Korea, and statistically, every populated area in the world along with a major portion of the ocean. Add in the long term effects of modern nuclear weapons we could very literally wipe out all life on the face of the planet.

I wouldn't waste your time worrying about it. Look at all the time wasted during the cold war and we were WAY closer to nuclear combat than we are now. Learn to accept that we live in a time of weapons of mass destruction. Live life, make the most of it, and dont waste your time worrying about it.

I'm not spending my every moment thinking about it and I essentially agree with everything you just said. However, doesn't their president come off as just a tad bit off his rocker?

Compared to the arguments that happened between Kennedy and Kruschev he seems sane so far.

I imagine North Korea is doing this for more aid to their country. They want billions in aid from us so their population doesn't turn against them. Its a front in my opinion. That is my pop psychology answer anyways. :silly:

part of me is very interested in seeing the proving or disproving of the "Self-lit glass bottomed parking lot" theory set forth by Space Command generals in 1998.

North Korea may not have the ICBMs necessary to wage intercontinental nuclear war, but they can fuck up our bases in SE Asia; then we retaliate....then what about China??

Why would they do that? As I stated above, the real effectiveness of nuclear weapons is simply the threat of their use. North Korea knows all to well that if they make the first move we will finish everything in the second. They wouldnt have a snowmans chance in hell surviving a US led nuclear attack and they know that. What would be the purpose of launching a nuclear attack against a few of our military bases when the reprocussions of that would lead to the anhilation of most of their population.

A.) Speculation and estemating. How else do you debate something that hasnt happened yet.

B.) Read my original reply. We kill them, someone kills us, we all die in the end.

and

C.) This is one subject that I have the credentials to support what I say. I know a great deal more than the average person about nuclear weapons, that can be backed up by my memberships and my personall collection of original military texts and memrobilla.

yeah; I'd like to think I know about nukes too, since my dad worked on Ohio-class subs

speculating a nuke war with N. Korea means speculating a MASSIVE loss of life in Asia...but that's all it is...speculation

if N. Korea actually has the balls to launch a nuke in an act of war.... damn

what exactly is the point of your debate? Are you saying it cant be discussed because its events have to be assumed based on current factors?

If you don't think its a debatable subject, then why continue to post?

Everything that I have said is based on 10+ years of personal experience with the US Nuclear Weapons program (not someone else's). I've been inside every type of missile base and missile silo that the US has ever constructed. I am a member of the Association of Airforce Missileers, The Atlas ICBM Historical Society, The Titan Missile Society, the Society of the Strategic Air Command, plus I am at least a standard, silver or gold member patron to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, The SAC Museum, The Pima Air and Space Museum, and the GreenValley Titan Museum.

Oh, and as of early this year (accepting that collections change daily as people buy and sell items) I have the 4th largest private collection of nuclear weapon and cold war related texts, photo's, diagrams, uniforms, factory models, and equipment for the entire state of Texas. Anyone who has been to my house has seen that every square inch of my living room all the way to my kitchen is covered in original pictures and diagrams of nuclear weapons, launch vehicles, detonations, and former SAC commanders. I even own "the button" and an actual piece of the manhatten project.

I can support even a theoretical debate.

i wasn't debating, dude; not on the possibility of nuke war with N. Korea; at best, it's a damn stalemate with them right now...but I was entertaining the thought of what MIGHT happen if they did do something stupid;

I don't really give a rat's ass if you have a W-80 warhead as a paperweight, or a Trident D5 in your backyard; it's really not pertinent to the speculations
