Ill always recommend the Korg Electribe series boxes.....I still use the sampler....for a beginer, or even someone more experienced I think they're great tools....you can find them for pretty cheap used nowadays, or if u want to wait n spend a bit more they are about to release new ones which look very promising (I posted a link on those in this forum)

or get your hands on an MPC if you can afford it.....

if hes talkin about hip hop, he wants an mpc. boss shit may be affordable, but any good hip hop producer will tell you mpc all the way. anyone know who wreckshop is ? dopehouse? out of houston.., ive engineered for both of those labels, me and my homie dexstrumental have releases out with these foos on capitol/priority and universal records. ive hung with cats that produced tracks for snoop, i know happy p very well, ive seen the world of hip hop production from the inside. ...mpc all the way.

and check out me and redbird in the new wreckshop movie.. "dirty 3rd part 2".. tha ghetto flik of the year! lol were like the only 2 white guys in the movie... so its not hard to spot us.

agreed.

MPC has nothing on the machinedrum; you can actually create your own drum sounds, very innovative.

I'm gonna say the same thing that you said about the triton, because the same applies to the MPC...

it's wak, and played out (REALLY played out)

i got a triton 3 years ago. I favored it over the MPC because it has more powerful features, like a fuckload of parameter-editable effects (and knobs to control those effects), and a more powerful sequencer; I didn't buy it because techno producers swear by it.

plus, when I want to play just straight up jazzy improv, it's first and foremost, a keyboard.

but for all practical purposes, a simple Boss drum machine would suit the needs of someone who just wants to drop dope beats.

Boss drum machines blow. Have you ever listened to how noisy the samples on those things are? Those and the electribes aren't really worth buying if you're planning on being serious... by the time you really get used to working with them, you'll just about be to the point of realizing that you SHOULD have sprung for something more powerful.

Anything Elektron makes is badass, but the comparison between a Machinedrum and an MPC isn't really valid. You guys are getting wrapped up in what's a cooler toy, as opposed to what is better for what this kid needs. The Machinedrum IS probably a niftier toy, but it's extremely expensive and highly specialized. You can make some cool sounds with it, sequence a beat, and then... you've spent $1200 and got PART of a track. You can make an entire song with an MPC, and I dunno what all this goofy talk about it being "played out" is. It's still a very effective tool for making music... what else matters?

Charlie, if it's within your budget, get an MPC. They've even got a newer, cheaper one coming out now. Don't bother with cheap drum machines... you'll outgrow them quickly if you're serious about using them. All that training wheels shit can be done with software for a lot less money.

Edit: And Ben, you know I respect ya bro... but if you want to talk about gear that is played out, let's talk about the Triton. If you're calling the MPC played out in the sense I think you are, I'd have to put the Triton right there with it. They kinda go hand in hand, those two...

hey, that's my point; omcreator had said that "the Triton is wak and played out" (old post/dead argument on " favorite efx boxes"), probably because he had heard familiar preset patterns in hip-hop tunes, and he contended that the MPC is a choice machine among hip-hop producers.

personally, I only use my own drum patterns, (and I preferred the keyboard element of the triton over the pads of the MPC, so I got a triton as my main midi controller) and now I only sample loops of my own work as well, to layer them onto running arps.

and yes, both tools are very popular, but ultimately, it's what you do with them that really matters.

I'd love to have an MPC4000 running with the triton and S5000; that would be my live pa dream setup.

I'm with ya... in my experience from working in music stores, the MPC and the Triton are the two main pieces of gear that dumbass wannabe rap producers would come and pretend they knew how to use. That's not the fault of the equipment... it's really more an issue of what's been used and advertised as used.

yeah, people that aren't using their own drum patterns... I know I've bitched about that on here at least ten times.

For real.
