Hey Dirk, just curious why you recomend to stay away from HP's. I've heard good things about them but its just been from regular consumers like me.

The OEM OS load is horrible. Tons of bloatware and stupid shit like FAT partitions for system restores. But that's the same for most OEMs

This may not be the case in their higher end laptops, but the middle to low end have very cheap manufacturing and components. Support from HP/Compaq is a nightmare. They make you jump through all kinds of hoops to get anything replaced/repaired even if you buy their highest level warranty.

Ah ha good to know. I've been needing to buy a new laptop as well

So then I'm faced with this problem. Dell is totally out of the question for me. Between the two dell notebooks I've already owned and the time that I worked for them I've been completely ruined on Dell.

I may go for a mac but I'm not sure yet. So what is so good about Toshiba?

yeah i feel a lot better about this lappy than the toshiba i was gonna get. the only thing i really liked about hte toshiba was the way it looked and felt typing. but *shrug* whatever, i need something thats gonna be able to handle the music production and the toshiba with a 512cache wasnt gonna do it.

I wanted to go AMD as well because of the memory controller, but it seemed like thwe C2D encoded audio much faster.

I went for the T7300 as well. Good bang for the buck.

xps1210 (t7200 w/ 1.5Gb ram, plain-jane 945 gfx) has never given me any problems. it's a workhorse, running Reaktor 5.12, Maya Unlimited 2008, ChemOffice 2008 and RasMol (3D molecular visualization). dual boot with opensuse 10.2
