...Well seasoned producers finally warm up to you and start sharing some of the tricks of the trade. Not to say that you would ever want to mirror their sound... But it's a great feeling when they take the time to nudge you in the right direction and shares some technique. That being said, my bassline's will now have -mad- junk in the trunk. I knocked a picture off the wall last night with a -thick- and -clean- 100-250Hz... Furthermore, FilterVST is my fucking lord and savior. That shit makes my nuts dance a jig. Amazing! =)

It's so nice that all of this is starting to come together... I can finally spend more time actually -producing- rather than -learning- to produce. I'm a happy fucking camper. =]

Three things:

Spectrasonics Trilogy
FilterVST
Akai QuadComp

Load up Tril and build/pick a patch that suits your taste. Try and make something that pushes right around the 100 Hertz Range and doesn't really move a whole lot on the top end. Place your cuts in time with the kick drum (Remember that you can phantom out a kick drum and replace it with a new bass note. This will keep your rhythm in time but change up the percussive elements so that you get a nice blend of thumping bass coupled with drum emphasis.) Toss on FilterVST as an insert effect and drop the first Filter down to a Lowpass that tapers off at 120 Hertz. At this point, you should have a -nice- slab of subbass to work with. At this point, and depending on your machine, you might want to bounce to WAV. Load up another instance of Trilogy and build/pick a patch for the top end of your bassline. This patch should have a little more movement in it so that it can define your bassline. Copy the MIDI from your original pattern and fire it through the new patch (You can alter the MIDI to taste if you want the top end to punch slightly differently than the low end... But more than likely you'll want them to ride together since you coded it to fit -in- the drums.) Insert another instance of FilterVST and switch it over to Bandpass. Line up the Envelope so that it kills the top of the Bassline at 250 Hertz and blends the low end into 120 Hertz range. Bounce this to WAV and layer to the tracks on top of each other. Add a Global Insert Effect of QuadCompress and apply some slight compression (Probably 3-4:1) This will help blend your two pieces together. Bounce to WAV. Once this is done you should have a pretty -thick- bass that fills the low end of your spectrum. The last step is to apply one -final- instance of FilterVST. Select a Notch Filter and poke a whole right around the frequency range of your kick drum (If you don't know what this frequency is, play the sample while monitoring it through a Parametric EQ <Or if you're really cheap... Play the Sample in Winamp and note where the EQ spikes... =P>)

Fuck... Gotta go eat lunch... This should get you started. =P

Reason doesn't support VST's?

Does it support DX?

I love how people always say, "Oh, you CAN do that with reason, you just need Re-knuckle and the hamhocks mod pack and blah blah blah."

On the flipside, I also love it when someone comes and gives you a crash course in good stuff.

Reason can do that pretty easily...no hamhocks or whatever. Reason has HP, BP, LP filters, and a compressor too. You don't need to buy those fancy VST instruments. Just cause it doesn't have VST doesn't mean it sucks. I also use Logic but Reason seems more fun lately.

In my experience... Reason was a great tool to learn on! (I used it for a good year before moving on to Cubase.) That being said, I eventually grew out of it. There's a reason that 90% of the producers out there use a sequencer such as Cubase, Sonar, Logic, Etc. You really get to pick and choose which VST / VSTi's are right for you, rather than having to work with their preset synths.

The Subtractor is a pretty nice FM Synth and Maelstom does Wavetable / Granular Synthesis well... But the moment I got to sit down with Reaktor, Absynth and Trilogy... I was sold. Beyond that, the number of Plugin's available for VST based hosts are almost limitless.

If you're still really set on using Reason, I would suggest that you Rewire it into another host application. During the latter part of my Reason use, I ended up Rewiring it into Ableton Live. The sound improved -dramatically- and the VST Support helped my further the sound even more.

I don't think I ever shared this with anybody... But this is the last track that I created using Reason / Live. Definitly a step in the right direction... But still nowhere near the stuff I can make today using Cubase.

As you'll hear, the idea's for the track are alright... But you can -definitly- tell the something is missing (Namely the Fidelity)

We like Fruity because basicly, the interface is super simple yet absurdly powerful, it's more than flexible, it has almost unlimited support for DX/VST filters as well as VST instruments, it's sound quality is great, and basicly you can do almost anything you want with it. More and more people are being convinced of this as well and migrating over to fruity, or a fruity/cubase combo (which you can run Fruity as a VSTi without some other program or plugin) for those of you who feel like you're doing some sort of wrong working exclusively in Fruity.

I'm not a snob by any means, I say whatever works for you, then hell yeah use it to it's fullest. I'm just becoming more and more in love with fruity.

Inside Fruity:

Options > General Settings > Skin (pulldown) > Silent Startup

Will take away that giant noise and the stupid melon.

And also, did I mention that the automation system kicks fucking ass in fruity, you can automate almost any setting in almost any VST or DX plugin or instrument? And it's stupid easy to link any knob, wheel, or slider in Fruity to an external controller like the Oxygen-8 or whatever it is you choose to use.

@ DJ^3 -

Question, I started using cubase about 3months ago and I think it kicks ass. The only thing I have a problem with is the sync of the different tracks, maybe that comes with time but damn it's getting old. It jst seems like it takes me more time to sync something??? Anyone esle have that issue?

I've used reason, live, sonar, and fl4. To me cubase by far is definitely the shit -- for me..
