Something tells me that this is going to be the investment of the year. I'm completely new to this, so for those of you who have macs, give me any advice you can give me. Tell me about things I should try out. I got too comfortable with Windows, thus I forgot that there are probably better way to do things.

Oh yeah, it came with a remote. It's like Apple just kissed my nape and wiped my ass for me. My roommate says that Apple likes doing that kind of stuff.

essential apps:
Firefox - web browser
Thunderbird - mail client
Handbrake - ripping DVD to divx
Toast - CD/DVD writing
VLC - media player
The Unarchiver - decompresses compressed files like zip, rar, etc
Adium - multi service chat program

apps you probably should get too:
Office 2008
Parallels - virtual machine program. allows you to run virtual Windows machines (at some point you're going to need Windows for something)
Photoshop

because Toast adds a ton of functionality the built in CD/DVD writing doesn't. recovering damaged discs alone makes it worth it. it's a full featured CD/DVD authoring suite.

Thunderbird works better for me. I connect to my mail server through IMAP and mail.app never worked right over it. also Thunderbird's spam features are far better and can read headers from spam assassin.

Dirk,
You should look into producing mini-pocket dirks.

I'd totally buy one.
