I'm sure andrea knows the definition of the word and that dictionary dot com comes in handy usually, but in laymen's terms, why would you need to encrypt and how does it work?

or maybe Frank is just a dick.

in layman's terms encrypting your hard drive keeps someone from getting the info on it, if they don't have your encryption code/password. in most operating systems (that don't have encrypted file systems) it's relatively easy to get data from them if you can physically put the hard drive into another computer.

e.g. I steal your laptop, take the hard drive out, put it into my computer and my operating system sees the new drive, with a little work I can access all the data on your hard drive w/o knowing your passwords, etc.

encrypting your hard drive keeps this from happening. they can steal your HDD, put it in their computer and while their computer will see the drive, they won't be able to do anything with it because all the drive's data is encrypted.

a few years ago the gov a.k.a "the man" wanted to require encryption manfacutere to build in backdoors for them because public encryption software had gotten so good. does anyone know what ever became of that?

"The Man" will get into the drive somehow.

This will keep "The Crackhead" and "The Mojado" from accessing my drives after they steal my laptop.
