I think we all need to step back and take a good look at "American" culture for a minute. For that matter, take a good look at any "conquered" culture.
Interjection; Apocolypto was completely inacurate and Mel Gibson is no historian.
The Mayans may have been "conquered" along with the rest of the native Americans, but their cultures live inside virtually every American home.
How long can you go without receiving the image of a dream catcher, totem pole, mayan or aztec calendar, tomahawk, ect.
These are integral parts of native american culture that are alive and well within every major American city. Take for instance the counterculture revolution of the 60s. In the US, it was fueled largely by native American cultural concepts as well as SE Asian from the Vietnam conflict while in Britian, it was fueled largely by Indian(Budhist) concepts who they had occupied for a great deal of time.
One Governing body may be successful in wiping out or diminishing another, but the culture is never "defeated". It is like a fungus. Everything it touches carries it's concepts with it and spreads it through cultural bariers, political barriers, ethnic barriers, racial bariers, ect. until it reaches nourishment and once again it will thrive.
That is one of the things that I love about this country: such a rich diversity of cultural influences. Virtually every place in the world has some sort of cultural influence on this country, and like it or not, you are part of it.
Racist assholes go out and "conquer" the world and their children see right through it and embrace the "savage" cultures that their parents hate. God definetly has a sense of humor or at least history becomes sarcastic in the hands of the immoral.

That's all fine and dandy but I still say all of the civilizations from the pre-Columbus days were a buncha heathens. Savages even.
