Pvt. Jason Sandbach, a 29-year-old soldier training at Fort Sam Houston, was pronounced dead at Brooke Army Medical Center on Feb. 4. Sandbach also was a spark plug on the Alamo City rock scene, a charismatic singer, a husband and a father.

Long before he joined the Army, Sandbach was known around here for his work with bands including Drughoney, Protein Shake and Forever Is Never (F.I.N.). Sandbach had a big spirit and an inclusive attitude. Rather than being at odds with rock-world peers, Sandbach worked to bring people together, support fledgling bands and keep fans involved.

The cause of Sandbach's death is still under investigation.

"There's no indication of foul play," said Fort Sam Houston spokesman Phil Reidinger. "We've ordered an extensive autopsy and that takes about 45 days to complete. Jason was an excellent soldier and an excellent student. We're bewildered by his death but we'll do a complete investigation."

****Monday night, Sandbach's friends, family and fans will gather at White Rabbit to pay tribute and raise money to help Sandbach's widow and two children. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Cover charge is $5, and donations above and beyond will be accepted.

As for music, the electric rock sounds will be supplied by Pitbull Daycare, Lokey, Prevail Within, The Y Equals, Staleshine, Uriel and Hogleg. There also will be acoustic rock from Panic Division, Jim Meek, Desdemona, F.I.N. and The Cinderleaf. The Uriel, Hogleg and Cinderleaf sets are reunion shows. Sandbach is still uniting the rock scene.
