As if a human beieng were playing them? Not quite.

Hip hop producers need to wise up and hire Bernard Purdie or Clyde Stubblefield if they want some REAL funk. :silly:

Boards of Canada ROCKS.

I do like a lot of what I've heard of Jay Dee though. Esp. the Tribe Called Quest and Pharcyde tracks.

also check out Slum Village Fantastic vol. 1-2, those albums were made in like 97-98, the drum programming on those had NEVER been done like that before.

My buddy graduated with honors and a 3.9 GPA from UT in Audio Production. DJ Shadow has a communications degree, not an Audio producion degree. My buddy cannot touch Shadow. Or Pete Rock or Andy C or the majority of the top beatsmiths that don't have AP degrees.

As Far as JD goes, I think he does have alot of help when it comes to mixing and mastering which can make all the difference. But they are his ideas to begin with. And he gets props for producing some dope beats even though he isn't my favorite.

I like Pete Rock, Large Pro, Premiere, MF Doom, Cut Chemist, Madlib, PB Wolf etc. How better to capture the human sound than to just sample it out right?

Madlib and Jay dee are Jaylib. They have similar styles. Pete Rock, Large Pro, Premo definently have seniority. PR and Large Pro's basslines are the most unbelievable, Premo is the cutting master, but Jay Dee can do those guys.

idunno about that one. the whole point of having words is to define the energy of the music tangibly to the mind. i dont understand how people listen to shit rap because "they just like the beat" . you can have the most bangin beat around, but if your spittin over it about how cool you are and how tough your crew is, or how your babys moma left you... it turns instantly in to a useless pile of grilled horsecock.

NINJATUNES. they know whats up with hip hop.

ROOTS MANUVA. he knows whats up with hip hop.

DJ SHADOW. he knows whats up with hip hop.

PREFUSE 73 . he DEFIANATLY knows whats up with hip hop/downbeat .

BOARDS OF CANADA. more hip hop/trip hop that just cant be fukt with.

----a phat driving beat/melody that hits the main sonic pressure points is mandatory in most music id say. but most of these hip hop "producers" dont get passed that. its blunts, beer , and boom ka- boom boom ka.

the only reason most of their shit sounds big and phat is coz some engineer that they paid big bux to mixed it down for them.

dre's secret-- a oold white dude and an SSL 9000 j . i can make kelly osbourne sound good on one of those things.

ill say it again.-- mainstream hip hop producers are for the most part unintelligable minimalists who think the MPC is the only drum machine ever made.

LOL dont mean to blantantly talk shit. im just an opinionated fuck. dont mind me.

I think the lyrics are just a novelty, like the visuals in a psychedelic experience.

Rhythmical beatdowns are far more significant than lyrical ones, as music is involved with the higher-order processing areas in the mind, to a much greater extent than language

Premo = Jay Dee - "Dedication to the Suckas"
Pete Rock = Jay Dee - "Once Upon a Time"
several others

Yeah, nothing against you Josh/Ruckus, but a degree in Audio Engineering doesn't imply shit for ability to produce. Hell, I dropped OUT of SWT's program for that because they weren't teaching me anything that was 1) even remotely useful or 2) I hadn't already known for 3 or 4 years. My reasoning was that it was dumb for me to try to get a formal education for music while picking up psychology and philosophy on the side... and by the same token, I don't think that education makes a good musician. It might help you learn some of the technical aspects faster than you would on your own, but the actual creativity is something that comes from inside IMO.

...and BOC is cool, but I think you guys are going a little overboard with the praise. They're not THAT good. This whole post is basically an argument about opinion, however, and therefore retarded.

All of you E heads have no idea what you're talking about...
Don't speak on hiphop if the only thing you know about it is what you've seen on BET and heard on mainstream radio....

Respect all forms of music people...

BOTTOM LINE: Our bodies respond to the vibrations of music just like chemicals reacting to one another when mixed, if ANY music, pop, trance, hiphop, rock or whatever is making someone feel the emotion the producer/artist intended, then it is a success.
We all have different opinions regarding this music ish. No one has any higher right than another just because he has a degree or thinks he got more soul than james brown's shoe on a filet...

And back to the topic... Jay Dee is nice, he knows what he's doing when it comes to soulful hiphop. He does get weird once and a while.
Personally, I like Kanye's sample chopping better than Jay Dee, and as far as mastering and mixdowns? Don't compare anything to Dr.Dre and his engineers at Aftermath.
And if Timbaland decided to make Techno/House music - I'm sure he'd knock your euro/uk favs off the map.

PS - Yes I am a hiphop producer - but NO I don't loop or sample.
