I think there needs to be a whole new driving test to prove they can actually handle the size of their vehicle.

The test should specialize in...

-parking in between cars from two directions
-reversing in between cars from two directions
-parallel parking on the left and the right
-being able to stay in your lane

The test should be more scutinous in...

-always using a turning signal
-yielding
-distancing the vehicle from other cars
-controlling speed

Today, within a matter of 10 seconds, I was almost hit by a teenage girl driving a V8 extended cab truck. Then immediately after, An SUV pulled out right in front of me and forced me to swerve into the other lane. They both failed to yield at their YIELD sign.

In my honest opinion, no one under the age of 18 should be allowed to ever drive a big truck or SUV unless they can prove the line of work they do requires it.

At the T intersection from UTSA onto the main road I was sitting at the light, someone in their SUV pulled out to beat the light before it went from yellow to red, it was raining, and the vehicle went into a double spin and the bumper ended up an inch from my door.

There are just as many bad drivers that drive compact cars and sedans as there are driving SUVs/trucks.

The whole driving test thing needs to be redone period.

I think they should just re-do the licensing classes.

there should be a seperate class for light truck/SUV/van... it should cost more, be more of a pain in the ass to get, and expire more frequently. they should also have one lazy, old, bitchy cunt working the license lines for SUVs just to rub it in thier face.

fuck SUVs. need more passenger space? GET A VAN. need to haul shit? GET A TRUCK. need to haul shit and sometimes more people? they can sit in the fucking pickup bed. this is texas, afterall.

getting groceries? get in your damn car, bitch.

Most of them couldnt drive a mazda 8 any better than the oversized gas guzzling pieces of shit they drive now. Its just the stupidity that goes with buying an SUV - if your dumb enough to get one (and get ripped off THAT badly) you obviously will have difficulty telling stop from go and red from green, cuz your fucking BLIND.

vehicle registration should cost more - they should tack on that $10 they tack on to 3/4-ton HD trucks (and bigger) to ALL SUVs... or better.. $20 SUV TAX :silly:

i dont need the space.. I really don't give a shit.. I like my blazer, and im not getting rid of it anytime soon and there isnt a damn thing you can do about it.

Look people..

Accept the fact that when you drive, people might crash into you.. Its your responsibility to pay attention as to what is going on around you. With that said.. I've almost been hit by more compact or mid sized cars then I have with SUVs. SUVs stand out more, so I tend to avoid them.

Long story short.. Some people just can't fucking drive and shouldn't be allowed to do so. If they can't drive an SUV, then what makes you think they can drive a small compact car?

(edit.. ive got compaq on the brain today.. =) )

i used to drive a '67 austin-healy sprite. i got used to getting out of the way of trucks real fast... 90% of them pretended i wasn't even there. i got run off the road on several occations. you just have to learn how to drive in a manner where you expect every other driver to be an absolute idiot, to the point that so when they do something normal you're actually impressed.

precisely the way i drive.

my major rules:

-dont tailgate!!! allow LOTS of room for the person in front of you to completely lock up their brakes at the last minute.

-never drive in other cars blind spots. also applies to 18wheelers. i either pass, or drop back. never will i ride any sort of distance side by side with another car. this is also what i see most often on the highway, is people talking on a phone or just generally spacing out, and not using mirrors and a turn of the head to clear blind spots.

these two rules have never failed me, you have plenty of time to stop or maneuver if something eats shit ahead of you, and you are out of harms way if the moron next to you decides to take that exit on the right from the 5th lane of traffic on the left.

the only thing that sucks about leaving a safe distance in front of you is that some jackass always seems to think you're leaving room for him to squeeze his truck in.

true.

oh well, corollary to that is, allow enough time to get where youre going so you can get there at a leisurely pace.

wave a pistol...I'm sure they'll acknowledge your presence after that.

I'm considering doing that; tired of all the idiotic/oblivious drivers.

last time I checked, this was Texas; waving a gun in anger is usually considered normal here. Besides, there are more moronic things one could do....like purchase and drive an SUV in this fairly flat/not-so-rugged landscape, or a big ass truck in an urban locale.

I am much more scared of 'urban rednecks' driving big trucks than SUV drivers. SUV drivers don't usually strike me as driving much worse than people driving cars here in Austin.

Meaning: both seem to suck equally bad.

Big truck drivers are a whole other level of stupid.

To drive a 4-door long bed dualie pickup, you should have to get a commercial license. Most of the fuckers driving large pickups can't even park the goddamn things, much less maneuver them.

Bakar: Precisely!

it doesn't mater.. if its a big f350 jacked up, and i can drive it around down town austin just because I can.. I will. You can't stop people from doing something they enjoy. Just because *you* don't get it doesn't mean its wrong.

I like my small blazer SUV. I don't need the space.. I flat out *want* it.. There isn't a thing you can do about it. You can't stop me from buying something that I can afford and its something I want. It doesn't mater how "moronic" you might think it is.. If I've got the money, and I want it.. I will buy it.. and there isn't a damn thing you can do about.

Period.

Bitch about it all you want.. SUVs are not going away anytime soon.. Deal.

that's pretty much a given in most cases; people buy SUVs on a whim, to keep up with the Joneses, not for any practical use. They buy it simply because they want it, not for the "utility". It's the typical AmerICan façade: hellbent on being a consumer, and drive-like-I-own-the-fucking-road attitude.

well, I'll tell you a couple of things that are going to change, because this isn't 1998 anymore: gas prices will still be steep (if not rise more), and car companies are going to respond to this change, by building more efficient vehicles. Only the really fucking stupid people will hold on to their mammoth-sized vehicles that they can't even properly park, because the world's not getting any bigger to accomodate them.

someone waves/points a gun at me... they are getting lead straight in their forehead... assuming im on my way to the firing range...

Its not the SUVs killing people... its the people driving them... an additional test isnt neccessary, as most deadly accidents arent caused in parking lots and while moving slow but by people being absolutely oblivious

that's the point.

people parking crooked is one thing (it's just annoying), but driving like no one is around you is a totally different story.
